How to Build a Dream Team in the Hospitality Industry
Hire people with these four traits successful employees share
Putting together a “Dream Team” in the hospitality industry can be challenging. On any level, dealing with the public first hand is a true art. Whether or not you have a seasoned professional or an employee who is fairly new to the field – both have to love the work and be eager for success. That’s the foundation for any successful employee, but there is more.
To find this, Cynthia Pesce, General Manager of Long Island’s award winning Inn at New Hyde Park, says you need to hit these four nails on the head:
Love the Work
I think this quote sums it all up: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” When people enjoy what they do, they are better at it.
Be Eager for Success
If you are eager for success, you are motivated. Who doesn’t want a motivated employee?! A motivated employee, is a better employee.
Have Diverse Experience
“I find having diversity, being able to react quickly to change or handling a variety of issues that may arise are a priceless asset and something that you can teach, but only to a certain degree. When working with individuals who have worked in several venues over time, as opposed to ones who have worked in the same venue for many years, they have a variety of experiences and are open to change and go with the times, if not be ahead of them.”
Listen and Communicate
“Listening is key to meeting and surpassing the needs of any client – social or corporate. It’s important to hear their goals, then with your experienced team, create the most successful flow for your clients. From the Executive Chef, Event Coordinator, Banquet Managers and all other staff, each plays a role ensuring the success of the event.”
If you focus on these three things when building a dream team of employees in the hospitality industry, you are almost guaranteed to have a strong, successful group of employees.
